Planting bulbs for safe relationships

The Mid Devon Community Safety Partnership is working with Stop Abuse For Everyone and local schools to help raise better understanding of safe relationships and how young adults can seek support and help when required.

In many cases of abuse there are children or other family members involved, even if indirectly. Children are often in adjacent rooms when abuse occurs and while perpetrators may think they are unaffected, we know that this is not the case and that children often are left with feelings that can range from fear to guilt.

To raise awareness, several local schools are planting spring flowering bulbs. One in four women are subject to some form of domestic abuse so they will plant a quarter of the bulbs a different colour or type to indicate this shocking statistic. Come the spring this will be a clear reminder for the children and will form a talking point for future assemblies and class work around safe relationships.

If you or someone you know is affected by domestic abuse then contact Devon Domestic Abuse Support Service on 0345 155 1074.
