Opening of new homes in Crediton

Posted on: 22 August 2013

New tenants of Joseph Locke Way and Station Approach joined Mid Devon District Council’s housing service at the official opening ceremony on Tuesday 20 August to celebrate the building of 22 affordable homes in Crediton. The new development consists of two 2-bedroom flats, twelve 2-bedroom houses and eight 3-bedroom houses, which were built to level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. This means that the homes are well insulated to reduce energy demand which should lead to lower fuel bills.

The Council developed the new homes with Halsall Construction carrying out the works. They are the first new Council houses for over 20 years and to mark the completion, Councillor Ray Stanley, Cabinet Member for Housing, spoke about his pride in being involved in the provision of the new homes and his plans for future developments of Council houses in the District. The ceremony was attended by a number of other guests including the Mayor of Crediton, Councillor Frank Letch; the Mayor of Tiverton, Councillor Janet Rendle; and representative consultants involved in the project. The event was to promote the importance, not only of housing, but also the significance of affordable homes in assisting local communities to remain vibrant.

Councillor Ray Stanley, Cabinet Member for Housing said “It’s great to see these fantastic new homes being completed and we’re very pleased to see local people moving in. This development will provide a lasting legacy of high-quality affordable housing for local people.”

Miss Jane Morrison, one of the new residents, cut the ribbon and was presented with a bottle of champagne and a bouquet of flowers to mark the occasion. She said: “I am very happy to be moving to Crediton where there is more to do with the children. I’m looking forward to having the extra space and using the local amenities”.

After the formalities had been completed, the guests enjoyed a buffet lunch at the Crediton Station tea-room, for which Mrs Linda Brown is thanked.
