Mid Devon Joins LGBT+ Pledge for Equality at Work

Senior Officers with Declaration

Posted on: 22 January 2019

All senior officers at Mid Devon District Council have pledged their support to provide a safe place to be “out” at work.

After working closely with the Devon County Collective LGBT+’s team the district’s Chief Executive, Leadership Team and Group Managers recently got together to sign the declaration pledge of support.

The Declaration aims to bring organisations together to create some common goals, as well as defining what an equal society could look like and the benefits to individuals, communities, businesses and public services.

By signing up to the pledge the Council has agreed to help individuals challenge prejudice and discrimination positively and respond to complaints and incidents in a pro-active way.

Chief Executive, Stephen Walford, said:

“We want to ensure our staff are confident and happy being themselves in their place of work and with their colleagues. We recognise that the language people use at work can have a big impact on the well-being of those around them and we want this Council to have a supportive and open culture which is free from prejudice.”

The pledge also states the Council will ensure its staff are:

  • Treated with dignity and respect.
  • Confident that managers will respond to homophobic incidents appropriately (this includes derogatory use of the word ‘gay’, harassment and discrimination).
  • Free to join the LGBT+ staff network and contribute to its aims.
  • Not regarded as ‘heterosexual until forced to prove otherwise’.

All Mid Devon District Council staff will be encouraged to share the pledge within their teams, showing our commitment to encouraging the Council and our staff to create an open and diverse place to work.

The Devon County Collective LGBT+ exists to promote diversity within the workplace, tackle isolation that some colleagues experience, and be a critical friend advocating LGBT+ equality.
