Mid Devon District Council to help residents save on their energy bills

Mid Devon District Council is entering into a new venture today, 1 December 2017, by launching their new energy switching service and comparison website.
Domestic gas and electricity prices have increased significantly over the past 10 years, with the average person seeing a steep rise in their energy bills. Whilst energy saving bulbs and changes in the manufacture of white goods has helped play a part in reducing energy consumption, many residents still struggle with their energy costs.
One of the easiest ways to protect households from sky high energy bills is to make sure they’re on the lowest possible energy tariffs. The Competitions Market Authority recently estimated that nearly 70% of residents with the big six energy companies are on standard tariffs indefinitely, resulting in UK residents paying over £1.4 billion extra on their energy bills, simply because they are not switching to a more competitive and cheaper tariff. Every energy company charges a wide range of rates for the same energy depending on the characteristic of their energy use; so it’s important for consumers to keep an eye on their tariff and shop around for the best deals.
To encourage people to do just that, Mid Devon District Council is launching its new switching service in partnership with Ofgem accredited UK Power, who run the comparison engines for many of the UK’s biggest switching organisations. The search engine which powers the switches is 100% accurate in determining the best supplier for the individual household circumstance and gives totally independent advice on the cheapest tariff. So you can choose from the whole of the market as opposed to some services which offer a limited number of suppliers. In return, the website generates income back to the council through commission generated from switches. The authority receives a small amount of commission from the energy suppliers each time a resident switches a fuel and this commission goes directly into supporting and improving public services which many Mid Devon residents rely upon.
Director of Operations for the Council, Andrew Pritchard, said: “We are proud to be able to offer a switching service to Mid Devon residents. By offering this service we can help residents save money on their gas and electricity bills, whilst ensuring it’s provided by a trusted source.”
The company partnering with the Council, UK Power, who have built and run the website, have shown that customers switching their supplier with them saved an average of £297, based on switches made in the first six months of 2016.
