Market joins Refill Devon scheme

Posted on: 13 February 2018

Thirsty shoppers visiting Tiverton Pannier Market can now rehydrate free of charge thanks to the Refill Devon scheme.

The Council has been supporting the County-led scheme for approximately six months by working with cafes, bars, restaurants and other local businesses to establish free water refilling stations for visitors. The aim of the scheme is to help conserve the environment by encouraging bottle reuse, thereby reducing plastic consumption associated with the purchase of new bottled waters.

To get a free refill of water, visitors to the market simply need to pop into the café and ask. The market is open weekly from Tuesday to Saturday.

Mid Devon District Council’s Town Centre and Market Manager Alan Ottey said:

“As part of the environmental initiatives we’re currently undertaking, I’m really pleased with our involvement in this scheme to help reduce the use of plastics at the market and in the town. The market prides itself on the range of goods and local produce it has to offer. The facility to now refill water bottles free of charge is fully supported by our traders to promote the reduction of waste, especially plastic and protect our environment. The scheme on the market has been operating for about 6 months now and traders will advise customers where they can refill their plastic bottles and is part of a market initiative to eventually eliminate the use of plastic in packaging, where possible, across all the traders. Businesses in the town can join the worthwhile initiative by going to the Recycle Devon website and signing up.”

Along with the Pannier Market, seven additional refilling stations have been established within the town:

Other stations throughout Mid Devon have also been setup independently. To find your nearest station, check the interactive map on If you’re out and about just look out for the blue Refill logo on participating shop windows, or alternatively download the Refill App.
