Local Plan 2013-2033 – public consultation on options

Posted on: 23 January 2014

Your chance to help shape Mid Devon’s future

Local people are being asked to tell Mid Devon District Council what they think about ideas for new housing and employment sites in Mid Devon. This public consultation is being carried out as part of preparations for a new Local Plan for the next 20 years.

More sites have been put forward as potentially suitable and available for development than will actually be needed, so by “having your say” you can directly influence Mid Devon’s future planning strategy.

One of the big decisions Mid Devon has to make is whether to still concentrate growth in the three main towns of Tiverton, Cullompton and Crediton after 2026, or alternatively build a new community to the east of either Junction 27 or Junction 28 of the M5.

Councillor Richard Chesterton, Cabinet Member for Planning & Economic Development, said “The new Local Plan will take Mid Devon up to 2033 and we need to decide on the best places to put new development. The more feedback we get the better we can judge the best way forward for Mid Devon. We want to encourage as many people as possible to look at the possible options and give us your comments.”

How have potential development sites been identified?

A ‘call for sites’ was carried out in 2013, inviting landowners to suggest sites that might have potential for development.  These sites have been assessed and all those considered technically achievable are included as options in the Local Plan Review. At this stage the Local Plan Review has no weight in decision-making on planning applications.

About this consultation:

It is particularly important for the Council to have responses on the following:

  • the overall levels of development proposed for Mid Devon and its settlements
  • the suitability of the development options suggested and whether any other sites should be considered
  • the need for new policies, for example self-build housing

Consultation takes place from 24 January to 24 March 2014. The options consultation and associated documents are available to view at  www.middevon.gov.uk/localplanreview, Council offices and public libraries (including the mobile library). The Council will also be talking to young people at schools.

After considering all of the responses the Council will develop a final ‘submission’ version of the Plan and there will be another consultation later this year before the plan is subject to examination in 2015.
