Licensing advice big hit with businesses

A new low cost Council-led service designed to help local businesses has been hailed a big success.
Mid Devon District Council launched a pre application licensing advice service in late 2017 and has received positive feedback from users so far.
The service aims to make the licensing application process as straightforward as possible for businesses and help is offered with application forms, conditions, statutory notices and supporting technical documents. The Council also offers on site visits to ensure businesses are meeting the necessary regulations.
Since its launch 8 businesses have already used the service.
Lead Licensing Officer, Tom Keating, said: “Our licensing team deal with applications on a daily basis and are experts in their area but we are aware that not everyone who needs a licence from us has that same level of understanding and the process can be very complex. By launching this service we are ensuring our applicants understand the process, have the facts before them and as a result can save a lot of time by getting their application right at the first step. We also want to help businesses consider the future implications of their application and help ensure that they apply for the licence that best fits their needs.
“We have had great, positive feedback from those who have used the service so far. Business owners have welcomed the personal guidance we offer and particularly appreciate that by paying for advice from the start of the process they are in turn saving a lot of time and money by getting the application right first time; allowing them to spend their time on other areas of their business.”
The Council’s Licensing team deal with over a thousand applications per year which include licenses for alcohol and entertainment premises, gambling establishments, scrap metal dealers, tattooing and body piercing venues, taxi’s and animal welfare regulation such as pet shops and horse riding centres.Business & Economy
