Culm Garden Village Secures Funding
Posted on: 14 February 2019
Mid Devon District Council has received a welcome cash boost to progress the Culm Garden Village.
Back in January 2017 the Council learned that land to the east of Cullompton had successfully been designated a Garden Village, with the potential to deliver up to 5,000 sustainable new homes in a country park landscape, with jobs, community facilities and transport.
Work is well underway to create a vision and concept for the new village with a public consultation event currently live until 1st March 2019.
The Government has announced £300,000 of funding to assist Mid Devon District Council deliver the project. This is the latest release of Government capacity funding and will be used to support project work including engagement with the community, highway requirements, and design quality.
Cllr Richard Chesterton, Cabinet Member for Planning, Economy and Regeneration said:
“The Culm Garden Village is an exciting proposal for Mid Devon and one we are currently progressing with the local community and land owners. This bid success will allow us to continue this work and turn a vision into reality. We know that no large scale house building is without controversy but Culm Garden Village is intended to ensure the development makes the most of its landscape setting and creates a green and leafy place that integrates with the existing town of Cullompton.”
In announcing the funding award the Housing Minister, Kit Malthouse MP, said:
“We have not built enough homes in this country for the last three decades, and we are turning that around as we work towards our target to build 300,000 properties a year by the mid-2020s. This funding boost is the next step on the road to delivering 5,000 properties in Devon.”
The development near Cullompton will require improved connections to the M5 motorway and will provide benefits in terms of natural flood management. There is also an ambition to re-open Cullompton railway station and improve bus transport.
The garden village project is being locally-led and is supported by Cullompton Town Council and Cullompton Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group and will be informed by several stages of public consultation.
A public consultation is currently live asking the public for their views on the vision for the Culm Garden Village as well as a masterplan for the East Cullompton Local Plan Review allocation. Have your say by visiting: https://culmgardenvillage.co.uk/get-involved/
While this is a long term project for Mid Devon building work could start on Phase 1 in 2023, once a masterplan is adopted and planning permission in place.Posted in: Planning
