Council offers free parking to help town centre traders

Posted on: 27 February 2015

Shoppers in Tiverton town centre will be able to park for free for up to 30 minutes in Market Place car park for the duration of road closures affecting Bampton Street, William Street and Newport Street in the town centre, starting on Wednesday 4 March.

The free parking for around 20 cars will be available in two parts of the Market Place car park which will be clearly signed: the area next to the Half Moon pub and the area next to the public toilets. Ticket machines in these two parts of the car park will be changed so that they can dispense half hour free tickets. Free parking will not be available in the remainder of the car park, where normal fees will apply.

Cabinet Member for the Environment Councillor Neal Davey said “We are aware of the potential impact on local traders when roads are closed for necessary work including improved road layouts and provision of new utilities. We’re offering free short-term town-centre parking to compensate for the temporary loss of free on-street parking bays. We hope this will benefit local traders and reduce any inconvenience to shoppers”.
