Consultation on proposed removal of public phone boxes

Posted on: 14 September 2016

British Telecom has written to Mid Devon District Council advising that they propose to remove 38 public phone boxes across Mid Devon. This is on the basis of low usage, the extent of mobile network coverage for normal and emergency use and that most people do not view payphones as essential for most customers in most circumstances.

Comments from the community are sought by 25th October 2016 as part of a consultation exercise. The Council is coordinating consultation responses and will respond to BT on a case by case basis on whether the proposed loss of the phone box is agreed, objected to or whether the community wish to adopt the box themselves. Responses should be sent to: and marked ‘Phone box removal’ and identify the phone box in question, or;
