Construction phase for new Premier Inn has begun

Premier Inn (Dec 2018)

After seven months of preparatory and demolition work to the eastern side of Tiverton’s multi-storey car park, the project is on track and construction has started.

Contractors Carter Lauren Construction Limited, which is carrying out work on the Premier Inn on behalf of Whitbread Property, concluded the demolition phase in early November. This marked the end of phase one of the project, which saw the removal of the previous car park entrance, the installation of a new alternative entrance, as well as the introduction of a pedestrian crossing and drainage diversion work in Phoenix Lane.

The contractor has been responsive within the community; supporting people coming and going from the car park during the changes, ensuring the impact on the area is kept to a minimum, keeping it clean and safe for pedestrians and maintaining disabled access to and from the council offices.

Once the demolition phase was completed, the contractors began piling, which involved digging holes into the ground and installing posts to support the foundations of the build. The foundations will be built on top of these supports, with additional steel work and timber framing being added alongside this to form the skeletal structure of the hotel. Whilst the Premier Inn is being constructed there will be a temporary road surface in Phoenix Lane, with the final surfacing being completed just before the opening of the new hotel.

The hotel is set to open in the autumn of 2019, offering 83-bedrooms and the reallocation of 66 designated parking spaces from within the multi-storey car park for its customers. Once the construction is complete there will be a loss of 75 car parking spaces out of 640 in the existing multi storey car park.

Tiverton town centre will benefit from the development with local businesses and tourism receiving a boost from its visitors.

Geoff Cook, Senior Project and Programme Manager for Whitbread Property said:

“With demolition work now complete, the stage is set for the construction of our new Premier Inn hotel in Tiverton. It is an exciting time in the project as the hotel building will start taking shape over the next few months as we work towards an autumn 2019 opening date.

“On the whole, Premier Inn hotels trade very well in market town locations. We are expecting the same in Tiverton and are looking forward to playing a positive role in the town by creating new local jobs and encouraging additional overnight stays close to the town centre.”

Stephen Walford, Chief Executive said:

“The construction of the new hotel marks a substantial investment in the town and demonstrates the market appetite for increased business and tourism stays in the area. With the Tiverton masterplan having been out to its first stage consultation, our award-winning riverside residential site now under construction, and major town centre regeneration and improvement plans now being worked up, this marks the beginning of an exciting time for Tiverton.”

Clive Eginton, Leader of the Council, said:

“As market towns seek to reinvent themselves with the dawning of the new digital age, we are fortunate in Tiverton to have a thriving independent retail sector, a pannier market whose reputation continues to grow, a vacancy rate below the national average, and a council determined to help the town thrive – whether that be through keeping parking charges low, or by investing more in litter-picking and grounds maintenance to keep our streets clean and the weeds at bay!”
