All weather pitch for Crediton

Posted on: 7 November 2013

At long last there will be an Artificial Turf Pitch (ATP) at Lords Meadow Leisure Centre in Crediton. After a successful application to Sport England for funds towards an ATP via the Inspired Facilities Funding scheme, the Council is proud to announce that the new ATP will be open in February 2014!

The new ATP will be created at the existing site of a degrading tarmac hard court area which is in dire need of repair. After 18 months of applications and bid improvements the Mid Devon District Council team finally succeeded in getting a £87,000 grant towards the creation of a 61 x 61m size ATP area  (able to cater for two 7-a-side football games). With over 40 letters of support for the ATP there is clearly a real need for this type of facility within Crediton. Currently any teams wanting to train on an ATP have to travel to Exeter, Okehampton or Tiverton. The area will not only be a great resource for our local football teams but will also be used by a host of other sports including netball and children’s activities.

To complement the new surface there will be improved floodlighting to the area which will enhance the facility and provide a first class recreational area. This new project comes at a time of great development at the Lords Meadow Leisure Centre; in addition to the ground floor refurbishment and first floor fitness studio extensions and enhancements that took place earlier in the year there has also been the creation of further car parking by the location of the proposed ATP.

Finally, the building of a bespoke training and meeting room with network points and electronic Smartboard, kitchen and toilet areas has rounded off a fantastic year for the leisure centre. This facility can be hired out by local groups and organisations at a very reasonable fee along with free car parking. Councillor Bob Deed, Cabinet member for Leisure said “I am delighted that a new all-weather pitch at Lords Meadow Leisure Centre will be available early in 2014.  I am grateful to Sport England and to MDDC for the joint funding of this greatly improved facility for Crediton”.

Any bookings for either the ATP or the training room should be directed to: Mr S Long at Lords Meadow Leisure Centre, 01363 776190.
