A guide to recycling over the festive period
Posted on: 10 December 2018
With Christmas fast approaching, the Council is again encouraging residents to recycle as much as they can over the forthcoming festive period.
The fact is that Christmas is the most wasteful time of the year and once the entertainment and cheer is afoot, the importance of recycling can be easily forgotten. Consumer packaging and food waste will naturally generate in greater quantities as a result of the preparation of food and exchanging of gifts.
Make use of your green recycling box
Wrapping paper, greeting cards, cardboard and plastic packaging can accumulate in abundance. However, please don’t reach for a black sack! Plain cards and non-metallic or embellished wrapping paper can go in your green recycling box. Wrapping paper is notoriously difficult to recycle, not just because most of the tape is still attached after unwrapping, but due to undergoing additional processes during manufacture; such as dying or the lamination of other materials including plastics and foils. If you haven’t bought your wrapping paper yet, visit Recycle Devon for inspiration using recyclable alternatives such as brown paper glammed-up with reusable ribbons and bows!
How to recycle a real Christmas tree
If you subscribe to the Council’s garden waste collection service and you’re planning on getting a real Christmas tree this year, you can put your tree out alongside your brown bin or garden waste sack throughout January. If you’re not a subscriber, be responsible and take your Christmas tree to your local recycling centre when you’re next passing, see middevon.gov.uk/findarecyclingcentre.
What to do with extra food waste
As disappointing as it is to see good food go to waste, for the unavoidable peelings, plate scrapings and left overs, please remember to use your blue food caddy. If your caddy is full you can place any extra food waste in a compostable liner or plastic bag and leave it on top of your caddy for collection.
Don’t miss your revised Christmas collections
All refuse and recycling should be placed at its normal collection point by 6.00am on the revised collection days as per your calendar. Alternatively, visit the Council’s Christmas and New Year collections webpage, or use the online collection day look-up facility.
