18 Year Olds to Receive Birthday Wishes and Reminders to Vote

eCard that will be sent

Posted on: 3 July 2018

As part of this year’s National Democracy Week, the Council will start sending emails to residents on their 18th birthday congratulating them on their eligibility to vote.

Mid Devon recipients will receive an email wishing them a happy birthday and reminding them that they are now eligible to vote. They will also be directed to the ‘Your Vote Matters’ website, which provides useful information about registration and voting.

Mid Devon District Council, in conjunction with partners such as the Electoral Commission, Democracy Club and Bite The Ballot, strive to encourage young people to register and vote. Young voters are the future of our democracy, yet are statistically the least likely age group to cast their vote.

The following figures from research agency Ipsos-MORI, illustrate the estimated turnout by age:

Jill May, Electoral Registration Officer said: “As we mark 100 years since some women were first guaranteed the right to vote, and 90 years since fully equal voting rights, we feel it is particularly important to encourage our young people to use their vote to ensure the future of our free and fair democracy.”
