Expansion to Exe Valley Leisure Centre
Posted on: 4 November 2016
Mid Devon District Council has agreed to invest in the development, improvement and expansion of facilities at the Exe Valley Leisure Centre. The decision, taken by the Council’s Cabinet last week (27 October), means the leisure centre in Tiverton will see significant investment in a new build extension, expanding the health and fitness facilities, internal modifications to existing fitness class areas and upgrading the changing and showering facilities.
Exe Valley Leisure Centre is open over 100 hours each week and is often at capacity, particularly at peak times. The level of membership has outgrown the footprint of the current fitness studio and plans have been submitted for a new build extension to add almost twice the size of the current gym and fitness suite. The existing fitness studio has approximately 50 stations and, with the additions proposed, will offer more than 120 cardiovascular, resistance and training stations. The Centre currently has in excess of 1,550 adult Zest members and we will be consulting with them on new equipment, accessibility and layout, to ensure we deliver what our customers want. The health and fitness teams will also be expanding relationships to work closer with local partners such as GPs, Cardiac Rehabilitation and Public Health teams.
Modifications will be made to the multi-purpose studio where many of the fitness classes are held, resulting in an increased floor area and equipment for those classes in greatest demand. It will also give flexibility for the multi-purpose room to be separated into two studio rooms to offer more variety of choice for customers. This multi-purpose room will also be available for private hire for groups, clubs and birthday parties. In addition, the changing facilities will benefit from upgrades to flooring, shower and locker systems and there are also plans to expand the parking by 50 spaces to improve the customer experience; particularly as parking can be at a premium at peak times.
With the continued growth of Tiverton and the surrounding areas, Mid Devon District Council is committed to providing excellent leisure facilities for its growing population. Construction works are expected to start in the Spring 2017, with completion by January 2018.
In the shorter term, visitors to the swimming pool can expect to see the upgrades to the changing facilities being undertaken during the 2016 Christmas holiday period, just in time for a healthy start to 2017.
Councillor Colin Slade, Cabinet member for Community Well Being, said “This is an exciting development for Exe Valley Leisure Centre and will once again raise the standard and quality of the facilities for our customers. This significant expansion and upgrade follows on from our successful investment in Lords Meadow, Crediton a few years ago. Encouraging our local community to keep fit and healthy is an important priority for this Council as it has such strong links to general well-being and improving overall quality of life.”Posted in: Business & Economy | Community | Leisure | My Council
